Pygeum contributes to the maintaining of health of mans prostate. It is mainly used to help the treatment of prostate adenoma BPH, a condition that affects men in the early 40s, but increases with age: 30% of 50 year olds; 50% of 60 year olds; and almost 80% of men over 70. BPH include changes in the prostate: increased size and increased density of tissue. These changes cause the symptoms of urinary urgency of a small amount, decreased secretion of the prostate, reduced bladder emptying. Incomplete bladder emptying increases risk of infection, inflammation and edema. 

 

 

 

Pygeum africanum is an evergreen tree that grows in some areas of Africa. The bark,which is used, is not collected until the wood is not fully grown. It contains three groups of active ingredients: phytosterols (such as beta-sitosterol), pentacyclic triterpenoids (including ursolic and oleic acids) and ferulic esters of long chain fatty alcohols (including ferulic esters docosanol and tetracosanoate). 

 

Bark oil contains many active ingredients,waxes, fatty acids, and other lesser-known components. The main biological activity of pygeum is assigned to the compound "phytosterol", known as beta-sitosterol. Phyto (plant) sterols are structurally similar, but with less efficient absorption than cholesterol. The biological effect of phytosterols is similar to that of hormones.

  

Pygeum helps maintaining blood sugar levels and supports the function of the immune system. 

 

Pygeum is also used to promote chronic prostate problems with or without sexual dysfunction and the sterility due to reduced prostate secretion. There are studies about pygeum in treating other conditions such as hepatitis C and HIV because it acts as enhancing the immune system regulator and anti-inflammatory agent.

Phytosterols in pygeum have anti-inflammatory activity. They can reduce edema (swelling caused by excess fluid), decrease prolactin levels, and reduce the activity of cholesterol in the prostate. Prolactin hormone levels increase in some conditions like the consumption of beer and stimulates uptake of testosterone by the prostate. It has been reported that increased levels of the metabolite responsible for the increase in cells of the body, dihydrotestosterone (di-hidrotestosteron), (DHT). It is believed that cholesterol increases the flow of DHT. 

 

Pygeum is used to maintain the health of the prostate in men over 50. There are no known drug interactions, but in rare cases, use of the product may cause a feeling of nausea.
